The AMGA inspires an exceptional client experience as a premier source for training, credentials, resource stewardship and services for professional mountain guides in the United States.

For over 30 years, the AMGA has been dedicated to supporting the guiding community through excellence in education, standards and certification to enhance the quality of services provided to the public, while serving as a resource for accessing and protecting the natural environment.

Acadia Mountain Guides Climbing School owner, Jon Tierney was intimately involved in the leadership and growth of the AMGA for well over fifteen years. During that time he served six years on the AMGA Board of Directors, chaired the accreditation committee for several years, and served as an instructor and examiner. Most significantly, Jon proposed and spearheaded the development the climbing instructor program. He served as the coordinator of the program for seven years as well as the primary trainer of course instructors for ten years. In 2004, the AMGA honored Jon with a lifetime achievement award for his contributions to both the AMGA education and accreditation programs.

Many Acadia Mountain Guides multi-pitch guides have been through AMGA educational courses. Acadia Mountain Guides was the first climbing school in Maine to achieve accreditation and is the only school in Maine to remain continuously accredited by the AMGA since opening in 1994. AMGCS has employed full-time AMGA certified guides and instructors every year since 1994, approximately 15 years longer than any other local climbing schools.

The PCIA is a newly formed non-profit organization focused on providing quality education and instruction for new and existing climbing instructors who primarily teach basic skills and/or facilitate climbing experiences. In addition, the PCIA Accreditation Program helps assure land managers, insurance providers and the public that employees of PCIA accredited schools have been peer reviewed and have demonstrated core competencies appropriate to the climbing venue. Working in concert with organizations such as the AMGA, the PCIA seeks to cultivate best practices aimed at improving the quality and delivery of climbing instruction.
