About Acadia Mountain Guides, Inc.
AMG was founded in 1993 and is owned by Jon Tierney. AMG operates a year round program of courses and guiding that extends from the sea side cliffs of Acadia to distant summits in South America and Asia. The school is AMGA accredited and all guide staff have participated in either PCIA or AMGA guide training and certification. Jon is an IMFGA guide who has served on the AMGA Board of Directors and the AMGA Technical Committee and was formerly an AMGA Instructor/Examiner. Jon is the current Educational Director of the newly formed Professional Climbing Instructor’s Association and was the original designer and catalyst behind of the AMGA Top Rope Site Manager (Single Pitch) program from 1997-2004.
During the summer, AMG operates primarily out of Bar Harbor, ME - home to Acadia National Park. Bar Harbor is a busy tourist town similar to North Conway, Estes Park, or Jackson Hole. The climbing is predominantly granite and Acadia is known for single pitch sea cliff climbing right over Frenchman's Bay. The 250' Southwall of Champlain Mountain features great corner lines on superb granite and is great terrain for introducing clients to multi-pitch climbing. Forty minutes inland are the Clifton Crags with steep sport climbing on granite. Alpine rock climbing on Katahdin is about 2.5 hours away. Both areas have excellent bouldering opportunities.
Alpenglow Adventure Sports is a division of Acadia Mountain Guides, Inc. Alpenglow Adventure Sports, founded in 1986, is a division of Acadia Mountain Guides, Inc. Alpenglow operates retail stores in Orono and Bar Harbor, ME, and on-line at Alpenglowgear.com. Alpenglow is a true outdoor and mountaineering store that maintains the flavor and tradition of a classic mountain shop run by active alpinists and outdoor enthusiasts. We sell what we know and we want shopping to be fun and educational.

"Having guided and/or taught single pitch instructor courses at well over a hundred climbing areas around the country I can honestly say that Acadia is one of the best places to gain a solid foundation in climbing instruction and basic guiding skills." - Jon Tierney, IFMGA Guide and Owner of AMG.
Owner Jon has been training aspiring outdoor leaders and guides since for nearly three decades. A major contributor to and early adopter of formalized training and certification Jon has been extensively involved in guide and instructor training through both the AMGA and the newly formed PCIA. In 1997 he led the charge to develop curriculum and to promote the now well recognized AMGA Single Pitch Climbing Instructor certification.
IFMGA Level Training
As a full service year round school and guide service, Acadia Mountain Guides provides opportunities for guides to pursue career development at a variety of levels starting with PCIA Base Managed Climbing Instructor and progressing all the way to AMGA/IFMGA certification.
In the summer, top rope and single pitch instructors can hone their skills at a wide variety of sites throughout Acadia and Maine while receiving valuable feedback from one of the country's best single pitch superspecialists. The multi-pitch terrain in Acadia, Clifton and at Katahdin is ideal for developing sound Single Pitch, Rock Instructor and Rock Guide skills. Aspiring alpine and ski guides can gain valuable winter and ice experience in the Presidential Range as well as on Katahdin not to mention the opportunities to apprentice on an international trip.
Each year we seek 1-2 additional experienced guides or instructors to join our team. Being an intern is a great way to get a foot in the door although occasionally we receive an outstanding resume from a first time applicant for a guide position.
We typically desire at least a 3 season commitment from new employees. This can include an internship year. During that time we work with each individual to customize guide development. Often it looks something like this:
Year 1: Internship (complete PCIA or AMGA Single Pitch Instructor by start of season), WFR or WEMT. Lead AMG climbing camps with possible private client work at end of season. If available during winter season, begin apprenticing on mountaineering and winter backcountry courses.
Year 2: Single Pitch Instructor employment (complete AMGA Rock Instructor course). Begin working on multi-pitch terrain via camp programs and private clients. Take AIARE Level 1 Avalanche course. Lead basic mountaineering and ice climbing during winter season. Apprentice expeditionary trip. Complete rock instructor exam at end of season.
Year 3: Complete Rock instructor Certification. Assist with staff training. Guide extensively including on trips to Red Rocks, Joshua Tree, New Hampshire, etc. Lead advanced camp programs as well (RP IV). Prepare for rock guides course and future exam. Continue alpine and ski skill development.
Year 4: Continuing development of skills and expanding terrain choices.
